Representation of the Qbo in the Tropical Stratospheric Wind by Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis

چکیده
The zonal winds at several levels between 70 and 10 hPa (roughly 20-30 km) measured at near-equatorial stations during 1956-2000 were analyzed to produce a one-dimensional approximation. The neural network-based technique applied was the circular nonlinear principal component analysis (NLPCA.cir) designed to characterize quasi-periodic phenomena. The reconstructed height-time series of wind based on the one-dimensional NLPCA.cir captures many of the characteristic features of the observed quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). The non-linear results were evaluated relative to comparable linear principal component analysis and found to produce a superior one-dimensional representation of the data. The NLPCA.cir analysis produces a single time series of QBO phase based on data at all levels. This phase was then applied to demonstrate a strong correlation of the state of the tropical QBO and boreal winter high-latitude stratospheric temperatures.

Nonlinear Singular Spectrum Analysis of the Tropical Stratospheric Wind
The neural network-based nonlinear singular spectrum analysis (NLSSA) is applied to the zonal winds in the 70-10 hPa region (roughly 20-30 km altitude) measured at near-equatorial stations during 1956-2000. The data are pre-filtered by the linear singular spectrum analysis (SSA), with the leading 8 SSA principal components (PCs) used as inputs for the NLSSA. The NLSSA fits a curve to the data i...
متن کاملIs the stratospheric quasi‐biennial oscillation affected by solar wind dynamic pressure via an annual cycle modulation?
[1] In this study, statistical evidence of a possible modulation of the equatorial stratospheric quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) by the solar wind dynamic pressure is provided. When solar wind dynamic pressure is high, the QBO at 30–70 hPa is found to be preferably more easterly during July–October. These lower stratospheric easterly anomalies are primarily linked to the high‐frequency compone...
متن کاملArctic oscillation response to the 1991 Pinatubo eruption in the SKYHI general circulation model with a realistic quasi-biennial oscillation
[1] Stratospheric aerosol clouds from large tropical volcanic eruptions can be expected to alter the atmospheric radiative balance for a period of up to several years. Observations following several previous major eruptions suggest that one effect of the radiative perturbations is to cause anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere extratropical winter tropospheric circulation that can be broadly cha...
متن کاملInfluence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on the Extratropical Winter Stratosphere in an Atmospheric General Circulation Model and in Reanalysis Data
The interannual variability of the stratospheric polar vortex during winter in both hemispheres is observed to correlate strongly with the phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in tropical stratospheric winds. It follows that the lack of a spontaneously generated QBO in most atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) adversely affects the nature of polar variability in such models. ...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on the Troposphere in Winter in a Hierarchy of Models. Part I: Simplified Dry GCMs
A dry primitive equation model is used to explain how the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the tropical stratosphere can influence the troposphere, even in the absence of tropical convection anomalies and a variable stratospheric polar vortex. QBO momentum anomalies induce a meridional circulation to maintain thermal wind balance. This circulation includes zonal wind anomalies that extend fr...
